Taking the cue from the "Recommendations" thread started for English literature, I would like this thread to be a lounge for the novice, casual and serious readers to mingle and share what each considers a must-read. Be sure to add anecdotes about the author's style, genre, background, etc.

the writer who will easily catch the attention of a casual reader is sujatha. not much needs to be said about him. he has posted several stories on his home page.

My interest in classic Thamizh literature was stoked when I read "Paarthiban Kanavu" by Kalki. Memories of those hot summer afternoons when my bedridden grandma used to fan us both with a visiri and I used to read out loud every page of divine Thamizh . . .ah I will treasure that for life.
Growing up in Madras in circles where literature meant Eurocentric novels, I was delighted to find rich Thamizh descriptions and profound themes in Kalki's creation.

What about "Mogha Mull" by T. Janakiraman ? I guess the movie is a sloppy visual rendition of the novel, I highly recommend it for avid readers.

I would recommend "sri rangathu dhevadhaigaL"
by sujatha! Good collection of short stories.

Babu: yes, mogha mull is an excellent book. the movie was not as good because it did not bring out the complexity of the characters well(especially the bhagavathar character played by nedumudi venu).

sujatha is writing a series of short stories in vikatan , from last week, titled , puthiya Athichoodi kadhaigal II. the two stories till now have been wonderful and strikingly in contrast. i would definitely recommend people to have a look at it(it is in the vikatan website http://www.vikatan.com/ ).

Chadrasekaran and Reka, I doubt if they update kumudam.net!
Hi Friends,
Here's my list of must-reads:
1. SivagAmiyin Sabadham - Kalki.
--I found this influencing me more than his other works. I would rate kalki's style to be simply beautiful. I also feel he writes at the speed he thinks. The descriptions of 'KAnchi MAnagaram' and those days of 'Thamizhagam' will take you there. You will be lost into another world. The novel's greatest impact comes in the last chapter of the last volume and leaves one heavy hearted and teary eyed. My sister told me she will never dare read it again lest she might lose that beautiful feeling she had when she read it the first time!
2. Sujatha's short stories are killers. I doubt if he can be categorized under classics just because he never uses "only thamizh" which as I can see is just not possible to bring the mood and feeling of present days' life. Somehow I can never forget his stories on panja poodhangal:
Neer, Nilam, Neruppu, KAtru,AghAyam - 5 stories
Vilai - a short novel
Vilimbu - a short story
--The underlying feeling in all Sujatha's short stories is some unexpected surprise which reveals just the different facets of men's emotions. Ofcourse, his style calls for just one sitting!
3. Sivasankari's
Oru Manidhanin Kadhai - I need not say about this.
Nerunji MuL - an indepth narrative of the life of
a social worker.
Poghapp Pogha - a very realistic love story.
--I think Sivasankari does a lot of ground work before and during the times when she's on a serialed story. She's adept in describing what a person does in a particular situation in a keen and exhaustive fashion.
4. Indumathi's
Tharaiyil Irangum VimAnangal - Never Miss It!
--Indumathi's sometimes called the 'Female Sujatha'. This is not to be taken as an offensive, what it means is she's just interesting!
5. Vaasanthi's
Jananam - I love vaasanthi for her peculiar style of writing. She repeats so many phrases again and again but yet she's never boring.
6. Balakumaran's
KalyAAna Murungai - a collection of short stories.
--Balakumaran has mastered the rendition of the different patterns of human behaviour, emotions, and feelings. He attributes himself his style of writing to Sujatha! I used to feel had he been given more freedom he would have come out with many more, greater creations!

Karthi:
Start with JK's " oru nadigai nAdakam paarkiRaaL".
His Kalyani is unlike any character I have ever come across anywhere, in life or in fiction. Before the story, JK gives an introduction to Kalyani which is stunning - a chalenge to the male world.
