imposing a ban on english??? no that will never happen. even if it happens, only the government schools will be affected and that too only till say 5th standard. people can cope up. here all the chinese learn englich only when they write GRE and they can manage(only our ears can't).

I may have misunderstood, but the article says that the Govt.is compelling 2000 or so private schools to switch to Tamil as the medium of instruction.
As NRIs, we certainly have an edge over the Chinese because we can speak English. That, the Chinese have a stronger grasp of Math and Science fundas is quite another point.
Even if it is only Govt. schools, why? No matter how silly parents can get, they want their children to be able to read, write and speak English and for a very good reason at that.
With the growing multi-national influx into India, those with little or no knowledge of English would lose that cutting edge in the competitive industry, with fellow Indians.

anu, this is really a bombshell and not what i thought of when i posted earlier. this is sure to cause an uproar and with court injunctions and politicization of the matter, things are going to be pretty interesting! IMO, english is really the way to go as it broadens the horizons because not much info is available in thamizh. let us first put things in thamizh and then try to enforce it as a medium of instruction.

Yes, the political repurcussions will be ghastly.
My concern is, what if DMK loses the next elections and someother party comes to power and revokes the imposition, imagine the plight of all those students! It's plain agony for them with or without the imposition. Darn these politicians!

My understanding of the version of this news
on the Hindu On Line differs.
I understood that the govet was forcing those schools to teach Tamil *also*; looks like considerable number of them were not even making
Tamil available as optional.
I tried to search the Hindu archives for the issue within the last one or two days that contained it and could not locate it.
I don't think the DMK govt is so stupid as to *ban* English...I can imagine the ousted competitor doing such acts in some avenue or other ;-).

banning english will only take the state back into the 18th century. and its really possible only at an official level. english has become so much part and parcel of the common man's medium of expression. people rarely speak in pure tamizh these days.

Hi Folks,
First of all, I would like to make it clear that I did not /don't intend making this an "English Language" issue.
When I saw the Deccan Chronicle headlines screaming "M.KARUNANIDHI IMPOSES BAN ON ENGLISH", it kind of caught my attention. The ensuing article described it as a move to "promoting and preserving Thamizh language " .
However, The Hindu on line conveyed the same message in a more mellowed tone.
Below is an extract from Times of India. I could not get to the archives of Deccan or Hindu.
Interestingly, some other papers like Indian Express and Deccan Herald did not even carry the news ( I may have very well missed it). This probably means that it is not an issue after all!
I admit that I am posting a follow up with the extract from TOI to defend my earlier understanding of the article. Hope this does not offend anyone. Please do post your opinions on this one. Thanks!

CHENNAI: Even as Sanskritisation is taking over in the schools of Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi on Monday announced that Tamil would be made a compulsory subject and a medium of instruction in important subjects in all state government schools and private schools recognised by the government.
Mr Karunanidhi said as many as 1008 schools run by the linguistic minorities in the state did not teach Tamil at all. These schools taught Tamil as an additional language. Henceforth, Tamil would be taught as a compulsory language besides the ``mother tongue'' of the students as well, he said.

I dont know about this news but I think our politicians are not really as dumb as we think. Last month when I was in India I went to a Titan watch show room and all brochures/signs etc were in tamil. you could fill out a form and take a quiz, again everything was in English. I think this is not a good trend. I told the people there that I would like to see some tamil signs etc. And my brother to others, 'Ivar thamizh kudimagan maadhiri pEsarAr' referring to me :-)
Doing maths and/or science till 8th std may not be a bad idea at all. Have you ever asked somebody who finished 10std in English medium to describe 'infinity'. Or far that matter 'wave' as in electric wave forms. But I feel we should teach our kids english from a young age as well.
Just that learning math/science in Tamil will give you a very good understanding of the fundamentals. Note high-school dropouts make up a large part of our labor force and you dont want them to be 'unscientific'.
Some of my friends who did tamil medium till 10/12th are doing really well in US.My brothers did tamil medium till 10th and both of them are very good engineers now.
So no cause for alarm. I am also happy they are starting this tamil thing in schools, which is the right place than in colleges. Once you have a good understading of the fundamentals it should be easily possible to switch to English. Especially, we are quite capable of providing books for high school in tamil but that is not the same case with engineering/medicine/science higher studies.

Going by the title of the news, we can understand that this is re: granting recognition for new schools. It is not very clear what will happen to the current English medium schools.
