I am starting this thread solely on selfish motives. :-))
I hope the word ´üÈ¢Ä츽õ (oRRilakkaNam) is correct. I would like to know the
rules for when should the ÅøÄ¢É ´üÚì¸û appear? All I can remember is:
Ãñ¼¡õ ¿¡ý¸¡õ §ÅüÚ¨Á Ţ̾¢¨Âò ¦¾¡¼÷óÐ ÅøÄ¢É ´üÚì¸û Á¢Ìõ.
Can knowledgeables out there or those who have access to the grammar books please post the remaining
rules?
(For those who are not sure what I am talking about: Consider the statement ±ÉìÌô À¢Êò¾ ÀÆõ ÀÄ¡ô ÀÆõ.
Here there is an ô between ±ÉìÌ and À¢Êò¾, while I am not sure if it also appears
between À¢Êò¾ and ÀÆõ. My question is:
What are the rules?")

Pas, I agree.
The key is *controlled* evolution.
Take "ain-dhu" vs. "anjcu".
It is admitted as evidenced by the kampan pAyiram
"anjcilE onRu peRRAn...kAppAn".
More later...Have to rush

Vanchi:
From your list list below:
------
1. sembaruththi (I am told correct term is sembaraththai)
2. maruthaaNi (maruthOnRi)
3. pavazam (pavaLam)
4. kaRuppu (karuppu; I don't know which is strictly correct)
-----------
pavaLam *is* perfectly all right.
"ÀÇ¢íÌÒÈò ¦¾È¢ó¾ ÀÅÇô À¡¨Å"
(Á½¢§Á¸¨Ä: 4:124, 18:78)
kaRuppu:
"°Æ¢ Ó¾øÅý ¯ÕÅõ§À¡ø ¦Áö¸ÚòÐ"
(¾¢ÕôÀ¡¨Å:4:3)
From the Cologne OTL:
karuppu
otl karuppu karuppu famine, dearth, scarcity
kaRuppu
otl kaRuppu kaRuppu 1. blackness, darkness; 2. anger displeasure; 3. moral delinquencey, blemish, fault; 4. spot, taint, pollution,
moral defilement; 6. scar; 7. rahu, the ascending node; 8. minor evil spirites; 9. opium; 10. ambergris; 11. ebony
kaRuppu
otl kaRuppu kaRuppu minus mark against the defeated party, in cards, etc (TLS)
maruthANi:
The cologne OTL does list maruthANi as *corruption * of maruthonRi...
---
marutaNi
otl marutaNi marutaNi 02 corr. of ->
marutANi
otl marutANi marutANi corr. of ->
otl marutOn2Ri marutOn2Ri 1. henna, l. sh., lawsonia alba ; 2. nail dye
-------
cemparuththi is *not* ...as there is only the cotton sense that is listed!
I do not see "hibiscus" here.
otl cemparutti cemparutti 1. a kind of superior cotton used in making sacred thread; 2. brazil cotton, s. tr., gossypium arboreum

OTL:
cemparattai

I general I feel that we must resist a a deliberate policy to accept deformed words.
We must focus on better quality education and more responsible *journalism*...the way Tamil journalism and movie media are going, Tamil will be essentially paNNith thamiz. We have to constantly make these people guilty so that they know that there is a higher standard for the language.
6thinai published a 1973 article by Sujatha on production of the movie "rajaraja cholan". There
Sujatha says "thamiz padangkaL oru stretch"...With due respect to the great writer that he is, it was writers like him who started this paNNith thamiz. I am sure he regrets it now(...he is contribuitng immensely to tamil in the 21st century now.
We simply need to start a movement to address this disease. E.g. The CM, and Tamil intellectuals need to make a hue and cry about the state of affairs in media and movies. Popular actors like kamalahassan should advertise on TV etc and start speaking respectable dialogues in his movie roles.
They should make fun of "paNNith thamiz" explicitly in the movies. Things will change.

chandhrA,
what is the puNarchchi vidhi for kArmEgam? isn't it karumai + mEkam. similarly, kArkUnthal. kArvaNNan. with these as guides, i kept thinking karumai meant blackness. also, i remember hearing in (or is it on?) the TV about the name karuppaNNan. i forgot the name of the person, but he mentioned that karuppu meant beautiful. i don't know where i am going except to say that i am now thoroughly confused :-)). so what does the karumai in the three words i have quoted mean? please explain.

Chandra,
Your Sujaatha story prompts me to narrate two anecdotes about Kalki...
I remember Kalki expurgating all "inappropriate" words from his novel" paarthipan kanavu" on the advice of the great Tamil scholar Vaiyaapuri PiLLai... inappropriate since they perhaps could not have existed at the time of the story etc...
How many writers are conscientious like that now?
(of course, Kalki served under thiru.vi.ka where he learnt the art... )
Another anecdote : When
Kalki interviewed "Devan" for a job under him, he corrected some of the grammatical mistakes Devan had made in the story he had written and told him to learn to write avoiding such grammatical mistakes)

Ennanga ippadi (maRupadiyum) engaLaith thittuRInga? :-))
Pasupathy,
You have to become member of the mailing list.
Go to egroups.com and register yourself with your email where you wish to receive your mails from the list and then search for the agathiyar group and join the list.
I think promad is at onelist.com with the same procedures.

aruLarasan/Vanchi:
Re: karuppu vs. kaRuppu:
These two differ significantly in their semantics.
kaRu-ththal the verb form is more common.
kaRuththal is more often applied to getting angry etc.
karuppu is more often associated with blackness.
About kArkAlam = kAr + kAlam
where kAr = rainy season of course kAr also means cloud whch in turn from the root for black.
But kArkAlam the compound word i snot derived from karumai.
actuallu karumai itself is derived from kar/kAr with the suffix -mai applied to indicate the -ness sense (paNbup peyar).
As for that karuppu directly meaning beauty, I would like to check that out.
But there is this word "kArikai" which means "beautiful woman" (popular sense is just "woman" but the true sense is the former).
That also means * "beauty"*.
