I would like to know what's kothavangai and "avarakkai".In english broad beans is avarakkai and cluster beans is kothavaraggai...but i don't know which one actual beans which we make poriyal and some times add with vegetable briyani.Can anyone help me plzz

Kothavangi is gas producing vegetable and not good for those suffering from gastric troubles.

Avaraikkai is an excellent vegetable with full of fibres and good medicine to cure internal injuries. This is good for diabetes and ulcer.

Avarakkai can be used for poriyals and also for kozhambu.

Avaraikkai Kozhambu:

Ingridients:

Avaraikkai - 1/4 kg
Onion - 2
Tomato - 2
Fenugreek - 1 spoon
Tamarind - To your tatse not exceeding to Lemon size (To much tamarind will sweeten the kozhambu)
Coriander Powder - 2 tea spoon
Chilly Poweder - 1 tea spoon
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 spoon
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
Oil - 3 tea spoons
Salt - Required amount
Coconut - 1/2 cup (optional)

Method:

Remove nerves from Avaraikkai and cut into two pieces. Chop tomatoes and onion.

Pour oil in a kadai and splutter with vendhiyam and add curry leaves. Add onion and fry until it is transparent. Then add turmeric, coriander and chilli powders and fry until masala aroma comes and add tomatoes. Let the tomato half cooked in oil and add avaraikkai & salt and fry in the masala until half cooked. When done add grinded coconut or coconut milk with kozhambu.

Vendhiyam is optional. If you don't like vendhiyam, just use mustard.

Kootu also can be made with avaraikkai.

Dhal curry can be made by boiling dhal with garlic and by adding avaraikkai, tomato, grinded coconut with jeeragam and chilli poweder and dhania powder. In the same method Kothavangi can also me prepared.

you can prepare the kerala dish "avial" using Kothavarangai ( cluster beans ). But please do not add any other vegetable to it. I like the combination of this kothavrangai avial with tomato rasam rice and "jawwarasi vadams"
