There are 3 volumes of Shyama Shastri's compositions compiled by Mrs. Vidya Shankar. T.K.Govinda Rao also has published a book of the kritis. Both these books should be available through The Karnatic Music Book Centre, 14 Sripuram 1st. Street, Royapettah, Chennao 600 014.

re: It is really a wonder that no discussion has been made on syamasa(s)tri
Actually there were threads on Taala and SyamaSastri started last year but they are missing now.
The use of Sahodari ( more than Talli ) as the assumed relation for Devi with SS seems slightly different from the way in which the other SriVidya upaasaka, Muthuswamy Dikshitar views Devi who typically uses Janani, in keeping with his identity with Subrahmanya. This larger view of the divine family allows MD to get inspiration from all deities, including Ganapati. SS is rather more focused and has no krities in Sahana, Mohana, Bilahari etc

I heard Balamuralikrishna's rendering of the kriti 'Deva Brova' in Chintamani.Seems to be a Gamanasrams derivative than a Shanmukhapriya derivative.Such wide differences in notations are the cause of many confusions and anomolies in Carnatic music.I am sure that no one other than Balamurali could have distorted this great Kriti of Syama Sastri any worse.Could anyone give a logical interpretation for this?

w.r.t to this, one must mention soumya's rendition of devi brova as a main piece in music academy, 1999.
though one felt that the raaga could not take so much load, soumya did full justice to it.

I too was at the 1999 Music Academy concert where Sowmya rendered an excellent "Devi Brova Smayamide" in Chintamani. In that season, I heard at least three singers rendering this song, Nityashri being one. Sowmya did full justice to this Syama sastri gem.

A fairly complete list of all SHyama Sastri Krithis, and the lyrics of all of them (with clickable link) is available in Todd McComb's website http://www.medieval.org/music/world/carnatic/shyama.html
There is also a reasonable transliteration scheme for reading the English text.

I recently heard Sowmya's 'himachalatanaya' in anandabhairavi.It is a beautiful compostion.Kalgada , a Janya of Gayakapriya(Parvati Ninnu..)is a raga born out of his genius.
I have heard DKJ sing this and of late Nityasree as well. What is also interesting is that ThyagaBrahmam is supposed to have a great respect for Shyama Sastri and has composed in kalgada as well.Kalaganda is another raga which is also a Janya of Gayakapriya but not atributed to SS.Kalgada has a pronounced Shuddha (Vivadhi)Nishada. It is said that ThyagaBrahmam was never happy with the way Shyama Sastri's disciples used to render his compositions after his death

Kartik: I have never heard of the raga Kalaganda. There is a kalkaNThi and a kaltaDa under Gayakapriya. And there is a kalingaDa in hindustani music which belongs to Bhairav (mayamalavagaula) thaat.
