Sahana is a janya of Harikambhoji (mela 28) and has the follwing arohana/avarohana:
S R2 G3 M1 D2 N2 S/S N2 D2 P M1 G3 M1 R2 G3 R2 S

The ArOhanam seems to be incorrect. It should be
S R2 G3 M1 P M1 D2 N2 S
The avarOhanam is
S N2 D2 P M1 G3 M1 R2 G3 R2 S
Good for singing in madhyama kAlam. Some of the well known compositions are:
giripai - Adi - tyAgarAjA
E vasudA - Adi - tyAgarAja
kamalAmbA - navavarna krithi - muththuswAmy D.
evvarEmi - ata thala varnam - patnam subramania iyer
rAmA ika nannu - rUpakam - patnam s. iyer

Puduhai Shriram : You are indeed correct about the arohana. It was atypo on my part. However, there are other aro/avaro for Shahana as follows (all in Mela 28)
1. S R G M P M D N S;S N D P M G M R G R S
2. S R G M M D N S; S N D P M G M R S
3. S R G M P M D N S; S N D P M G M R G S
4. S R G M P M D N S; S D P M G M R S
5. S R G M P M D N S; S N S D P M G M R G R S
Apart from # 2 arohana all of the others have the same scale with differing avarohanas. It is difficult to figure out the standard since different musicians use different scales I suppose.

Huh? How can there be so many variations of A/A for the same sahAnA? Please quote your source that mentions these variations.
My source is Prof. SRJ's and Prof. Sambamurthy's books.
Cheers

Sree : The five aro/avaro of Shahana are from the book Ragapravaham by Dr. M N.Dandapani and D.Pattammal. The first scale mentioned is the interpretation of Nadamuni Panditar as given in his treatise Sangita svaraprastara sagarm publishe d in 1906. The other four are by B.M.Sundaram in his book Palaiyazhi 1958. Page numbers for reference: page 154 for tha scales and page 263/264 for the others

Something to do with the performer, perhaps? :-)

:-)) Maybe VVSadagopan was against this ? Seriously, it may also may have to do with the listener. Two of them are HariKambhoji swaras and SriRanjani (j22) krities ( dont know which ones haris heard ) may stress the common notes.
